In a clamshell heat press, the top platen (heated plate) and the bottom platen are hinged together at the back, allowing the top platen to swing upward and away from the bottom platen when opened. Because of the way pressure is applied, clamshell presses aren’t recommended for thicker garments like sweatshirts or mouse pads. 1. Swing-Away Heat Press

A swing-away heat press has a top platen that swings horizontally away from the lower platen, typically on a pivot point at the center or side of the machine. This design allows full access to the lower platen without obstruction from the heat source, facilitating easier placement and alignment of substrates, especially thicker or bulkier items. Moreover, the swing-away heat press is safer as it reduces the risk of knuckle burns. However, it may require more space compared to clamshell models due to the lateral movement of the top platen.

You typically have more options in this range, including clamshell and swing-away and other options like auto-open timers. The 16”x20” is a decent step up in size and overall footprint, and we generally recommend these more for users who know they want the extra work-area space or for white toner printers as they make it easier to transfer A-B Sheets.
